Discover a new style of kickboxing with Royce Allas at Practical Karate in San Diego

If you want more than a typical fitness class and are interested in learning real kickboxing techniques, check out Practical Karate’s new program. Royce Allas leads the new Kickboxing Monday; Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in San Diego’s Bay Ho neighborhood.

Whether you want to get fit, learn striking skills, compete, or just push yourself in a supportive setting, Royce offers a coaching style that combines years of martial arts experience with modern kickboxing techniques.

A Champion’s Foundation

Royce Allas stands out as a kickboxing instructor. Before he started kickboxing, he was already one of America’s top young karate competitors and a two-time Junior U.S. National Karate Champion.

Years of top-level karate competition gave Royce great timing, speed, footwork, and distance control. Instead of leaving his karate background behind, he has built on it to create an effective and exciting kickboxing style.

Students soon see that movement is just as important as power. Royce shows how smart footwork creates opportunities, improves defense, and lets fighters strike quickly while staying ahead of their opponents.

From Karate Champion to Kickboxer

Royce’s journey into kickboxing began in a unique way.

He first entered the sport as a sparring partner for world-renowned kickboxing champion Tiffany “Time Bomb” Van Soest. At the time, Van Soest was preparing to face an opponent with a strong Tae Kwon Do background, and Royce’s dynamic karate movement and kicking ability made him the ideal training partner.

After finishing his competitive karate career, Royce dove into kickboxing and soon found a real passion for it. Mixing karate with boxing combos, low kicks, and Muay Thai moves started a new chapter in his martial arts path.

Royce didn’t just adapt to kickboxing—he worked hard to master every part of it.

Learning from One of Southern California’s Best

Royce refined his skills under the instruction of Alex Palma, head coach of Blue Ocean Muay Thai, one of Southern California’s top kickboxing gyms.

With Palma’s guidance, Royce learned the details of Dutch kickboxing, Japanese kickboxing, and Muay Thai and saw how each style works well with the others.

Royce blended these striking styles with the movement, timing, and footwork he developed from years of top-level karate.

The result is a dynamic, fast-paced striking system that is difficult to predict and incredibly effective.

Inspired by the Evolution of Japanese Kickboxing

One of the most exciting developments in combat sports today is the emergence of elite Japanese kickboxers who have successfully transitioned from karate to world-class competition.

Royce’s current coaching philosophy draws inspiration from athletes, including:

  • Tenshin Nasukawa
  • Yuki Yoza
  • Takeru Segawa
  • Masaaki Nori
  • Hiroki Akimoto

These fighters have demonstrated that karate’s exceptional movement, blitz attacks, and explosive entries can be successfully integrated into modern kickboxing at the highest levels.

Instead of treating karate and kickboxing as separate disciplines, Royce teaches students how the two arts naturally complement each other.
It’s an exciting style that rewards timing and technique over brute force.

More Than Just a Workout

Although Royce’s classes are rooted in authentic kickboxing, they also provide an outstanding full-body workout.

Every session develops:

  • Cardiovascular endurance
  • Coordination
  • Balance
  • Agility
  • Flexibility
  • Explosive power
  • Core strength
  • Mental focus
  • Self-confidence

Students can expect structured classes that include technical instruction, partner drills, footwork development, combination training, conditioning, and controlled skill application.

Learn to Move Like a Fighter

One of the defining characteristics of Royce’s classes is the emphasis on movement.

Many fitness kickboxing classes teach students to stand in place while throwing combinations. Royce believes movement is what separates martial artists from simply hitting pads.

Students learn how to:

  • Create angles instead of backing straight up.
  • Control distance through intelligent footwork.
  • Enter and exit exchanges safely.
  • Blend kicks with boxing combinations.
  • Improve reaction time.
  • Generate power through proper mechanics.
  • Strike while remaining balanced and defensively responsible.

These principles benefit competitive fighters while also making beginners more coordinated and confident.

A Positive Training Environment

Practical Karate has built its reputation by providing high-quality martial arts instruction in a welcoming atmosphere.

Royce continues that tradition by creating classes where students encourage one another, challenge themselves, and enjoy the learning process.

There is no pressure to compete. Whatever your goals, Royce provides knowledgeable coaching that meets you where you are.
